It started on this riverbank in 1608.

In the summer of 1608, Samuel de Champlain and about 28 men came ashore below Cap Diamant and built a wooden habitation beside the St. Lawrence. Most of them did not survive the first winter. The settlement did.

Yet the founder of Québec keeps his secrets. No one knows his real face: no authentic portrait of Champlain exists, and the one you see everywhere was copied from an engraving of another man. No one knows where he is buried either: he died in Québec on 25 December 1635, and his grave has never been found. These are the stories you learn walking with a guide, not on your own.

Why go with a guide

On your own, you see the walls. With a guide, you hear their stories.

Old Québec packs more than 400 years of history into a few streets, and most visitors walk right past it. In two hours, your guide shows you what you would have missed.

15 spots per departure. When a departure is full, it is full.

Journal

Journal: planning your Québec City visit.

Twenty years spent sharing this city's tales. Here is what our guides remember, recommend, and talk about when you ask them.

Do I need to book in advance?
Booking is recommended for every Tours Voir Québec walk. From May 1 to October 31 you can join The Grand Tour without a reservation, but departures are capped at 15 people per guide and fill up. From November 1 to April 30 a reservation is required to guarantee a departure.
Is there a minimum number of people for a tour to run?
From May 1 to October 31, Tours Voir Québec public tours run with no minimum. From November 1 to April 30, a minimum of 2 people is required. Private tours have no minimum in any season.
How do I pay?
Tours Voir Québec accepts Visa and Mastercard in Canadian dollars, at the desk or online with any credit card through the booking calendar. Private and group tours can also be paid by company cheque, with invoicing after the activity on request.
What is your cancellation policy?
Public tours booked online with Tours Voir Québec can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before departure. Private tours can be cancelled at no cost up to 48 hours before departure. Full payment is taken at the time of booking.
Where does The Grand Tour depart from, and is there parking?
The Grand Tour departs from the Tours Voir Québec desk inside the Centre Infotouriste at 12 rue Sainte-Anne, in Old Québec, facing the Château Frontenac. Paid parking is available under Québec City Hall and along rue des Remparts. RTC bus routes 3, 7 and 11 stop nearby.
Is the tour bilingual, or one language at a time?
Each Tours Voir Québec departure is conducted in one language only. The Grand Tour runs in English and Le Vieux-Québec Inédit runs in French. If you book an English departure, the entire tour is in English.
How many sites will we see?
The Grand Tour by Tours Voir Québec covers at least twenty significant historic sites in Old Québec in about two hours, including Dufferin Terrace, Place Royale, Petit-Champlain, the Ursulines' Convent, Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica and the fortifications.
Why walk instead of taking a bus tour?
Tour buses are not allowed in the most distinctive streets of Old Québec, so the sites that matter can only be reached on foot. A Tours Voir Québec walking tour also lets you talk with a licensed local guide for the whole two hours.
Do you go inside the Château Frontenac or the Citadel?
The Château Frontenac is on the Tours Voir Québec route but tour groups cannot enter the hotel; many guides show the interior courtyard. The Citadelle of Québec is an active military base with its own guided tours, so the walking tour covers its exterior and history. To go inside, take the Citadelle's own tour after your walk, or ask Tours Voir Québec to build the Citadelle into a private tour.
What happens if it rains?
Tours Voir Québec tours run rain or shine, year round. Guides generally stay outdoors; in poor weather they may step inside Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica or the Ursulines' Chapel for part of the tour.
Do your guides wear costumes?
No. Tours Voir Québec guides wear a name tag and carry their official Québec City tour guide licence. The company does not use costumes.
How many people can join a private tour?
A Tours Voir Québec private tour takes up to 20 adults per guide on foot, and up to a full coach with a step-on guide. There is no minimum: a private tour can be just two people.
How far in advance do I need to book a private tour?
Private tours with Tours Voir Québec can usually be arranged on short notice. Give an approximate headcount when you reserve and confirm the final number the day before. Special arrangements, such as themed itineraries or meals, need more lead time.
Are private tours suitable for seniors or reduced mobility?
Yes. Tours Voir Québec private tours adjust walking distance and pace to the age and physical condition of the group, and a lunch break can be built into the itinerary.
Do you run scavenger hunts for groups?
Yes. Tours Voir Québec runs historical Scavenger Hunts through the buildings and monuments of Old Québec for corporate and private groups. The schedule is flexible, with a minimum of 10 paying participants; teams of 3 to 5 people are recommended for groups under 60.
Do you work with school groups?
Yes. Tours Voir Québec offers Scavenger Hunts and guided walks adapted to school groups of different grade levels, in English or French.
Can you plan a full itinerary for our tour group?
Yes. The Tours Voir Québec Tour and Travel service plans complete Québec City itineraries for groups: attractions, historic sites, realistic timing and transfers between them.
